,the oil shop,where you could buy 2 nails instead of a pack,paraffin oil for the lamps,have your wireless battery charged,paint mixed to any colour,screws,nuts and bolts, and like you we had a snobs (cobbler) who could mend shoes and bags,belts for a pittance. we never had toasters or vacuum cleaners for we did not have electricity in the house until about 1936,which my father paid in instalments and we never refrigeration until the late 50s.
